Almost three and a half years ago the national “Dignity in Care Campaign” was launched by the Department of Health and its partners.

The campaign’s aim is to improve the quality of care and the experience of people using hospital, care home and other services by emphasising the need for personalised care, being treated with respect and being recognised as an individual.

As part of the campaign a Dignity Action Day has been established as an annual event, to give everyone the opportunity to contribute to upholding people's rights to dignity, and provide a truly memorable day for people receiving care.

The first Dignity Action Day took place on 25th February nationally. Heathlands Village, which is part of the Federation of Jewish Services, following its merger with The Fed last November, took part in the countrywide event, with a busy programme of stimulating activities, designed to appeal to Residents’ varied interests and abilities.

The Federation of Jewish Services’ Strategic Development Manager, Charlene Leak summed up the purpose of Dignity Action Day, “It reminds us that when it comes to caring for people, only the best is good enough.”

Heathlands Dignity Day began with a Pamper Morning in the Recreational Therapy (RT) Room, when Residents and tenants of Moorview Sheltered Housing were treated to relaxing sessions of hand massage and manicure.

Tracy Rawson, who joined Heathlands on January 1st as a Recreational Assistant, running the arts section of the RT Room, organised a special art workshop on the theme of “Memories”.

In the evening Residents enjoyed a lively concert with Johnny Prenton, billed as “Manchester’s very own Mr. Rock and Roll”.

Pictured with her artwork from the morning workshop is regular day-care attendee, Jane Jackson. A keen former traveler, Jane produced a collage memory board recalling many of her past travels.
